Roman Catholicism

The Pope’s Church

Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said: “I love all religions.”

- Orthodox have always believed that light has no fellowship with darkness -

The term Roman Catholic is actually a fairly recent title for the Pope’s church.

Here are a Few Backward and/or Opposite Ways of the Roman Catholic Church

o       The Stations of the Cross – Orthodox do not have these but the Catholics do.

o       Married Clergy – Orthodox priests can and often have been married, celibate priests are generally recluse; the Catholics require all priests to be celibate.

o       Sign of the Cross – Orthodox cross themselves from right to left, the Catholics left to right contrary to the original and correct practice.

o       Transubstantiation – This is a detailed Catholic explanation for how the Eucharist changes and the Orthodox see this more as a mystery, unexplainable for the most part and do not use the word.

o       The Eucharist – The Eucharistic bread is leavened in Orthodoxy, unleavened for Romans; the Orthodox give both elements, the Catholics only one, which they claim is both.

o       Shaven Clergy – Generally speaking Catholic clergy are shaven and the Orthodox people do not shave.

o       Creed/Filioque – The Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit proceeds eternally from the Son (which is unfounded), the Orthodox say the Holy Spirit proceeds eternally only from the Father. The Catholics distort the Trinity as this is about the nature of God. Most every Protestant church has never denounced the alteration of Rome and so they also have a confused notion of the All-Holy Trinity in this area.

o       Supremacy – The Catholics believe that the Pope is the supreme head over all Christians on earth. When the Pope was not in heresies the Orthodox honored the Pope as “first among equals” using only the word for ‘primacy’ but never ‘supremacy’.

o       The Virgin Mary – The Catholics claim her being Co-Redemptrix (among other errors); the Catholics are at odds with the Orthodox on these points.

o       Monastic Orders – There are monastic orders for Romans, all with a differing focus; with Orthodox there is just one aim, and that is for all “ascetics” (including clergy, monastic and lay people) and this is to obtain the kingdom of heaven.

o       Statues – The Catholics use statues, the Orthodox do not use them.

o       Sacred Heart – The Catholics get off base here by theologically isolating a single part of the Lord’s body for worship. This seems to contradict the Incarnation to me and is not seen in Orthodoxy.

o       Iconography – One difference between Western and Eastern iconography is that the vanishing point is reversed, giving an opposite effect.

o       Fasting – The Catholics have basically abandoned fasting as the ordinary Christian way, but the Orthodox continue its practice as it was established long ago.

o       Easter – The Pope hired pagans to create another calendar and changed the dates so that now their “Easter” often falls before Passover which contradicts the rule, whereas the Orthodox keep Pascha correctly with the ancient Christian calendar.

o       Orientation – The Orthodox orientate to the east during services to the Lord while the Catholics generally take no mind.

o       Instrumental Liturgy – The Catholics introduced instrumental music to their worship, Orthodoxy has kept Chant as the Psalmology of the Church.

o       Pews – Generally you will find pews in the middle of most Catholic churches, never with Orthodoxy.

o       Baptism – The baptismal rule for Orthodox Christians is immersion, while the Catholics merely sprinkle or pour.

o       Infant Reception of the Eucharist – The Catholics don't allow communion till confirmation at the age of accountability; the Orthodox commune infants as they are completely a part of the faithful.

o       Purgatory – The Catholics added the erroneous doctrine of Purgatory, the Orthodox have no such teaching.

o       Indulgences – This act of paying off sin with money is a sad idea that the Catholics came up with, the Orthodox deny even the possibility of such a thing.

o       Architecture – The Catholics don't make use of an iconostasis and the Orthodox do. You can find much stained glass with the Catholics, where you won't with Orthodoxy. The steeples of Catholics show mans attempt to reach to heaven where the Orthodox domes reveal that God has come down from heaven to embrace us.

o       Kneeling on Sundays – The Catholics kneel on Sunday; the Orthodox do not.

o       Canonization of Saints – Orthodoxy does not follow a particular process for making a saint, unlike the Romans.

o       Changing Canons – Catholics change their canons often, even in the last generation; Orthodox keep all the guidelines of the Holy Spirit.

o       Prayer Unions – The Roman Catholics pray with nearly every false spirituality; true Orthodox do not pray with anyone other than the identical One Faith.

o       Augustine – He is holy (a Saint) to Roman Catholics, Orthodox see Augustine as an Arch-heretic.

[Admittedly these are just off the top of my head, any input is desired]

Just to show how far false Orthodox go these days here is the OCA

metropolitan fully vested in chambers with heretics, too comfy for my liking.

Orthodox and Catholic Communion

Patriarch Athenagoras boasted that he gave communion to both Roman Catholics and Protestants. In England, Archbishop Methodios, who is under the Ecumenical Patriarchate, has done the same. Bishop Kallistos Ware, by his own admission, has given communion to the Monophysites. Within the Soviet Union, the Moscow Patriarchate gives communion to Roman Catholics “when no church of their own is nearby.” In his book, The Thyateira Confession, Archbishop Athenagoras Kokkinakis, with the official approval of Patriarch Demetrios and his Synod, writes that it is permitted for Roman Catholics to receive communion from the Orthodox, and vice versa. Here is a reference.

We also need to remember that Roman Catholics added notes to the Pedalion (aka “Rudder” - Orthodox Canon Law) during the many centuries of the Latin captivity of Orthodoxy. During this time it was forbidden by the Turks to print Christian books in the Balkans. All such materials were sent to Venice, a papal region, to be printed.
